When you are a blogger, the number one thing you want to see is that people are reading your posts. Otherwise, what is the point of writing it? But pageviews don’t come by magic. Here are 5 things you can do to generate more blog traffic…for free!
As a fellow blogger, I know sometimes it feels like nothing you do matters, but that is definitely not true.
Everything you do or don’t do matters.
So when you’re feeling frustrated because you want more people coming to see your blog, try one of these things.
1. Write a new post.
Google likes to see that your website is being updated regularly. Producing fresh helpful content with good keyword research is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your blog.
You’ll never generate more blog traffic if you’re not posting useful content.
If you’re drawing a blank on post ideas, here are some ways to find inspiration:
- Think about what you have going on in your life right now.
- Do you have a problem that you’re working to fix? If you have a problem, it’s likely your readers do, too.
- Find a way to make it fit in your niche. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of looking at your problem from a different angle.
- Write about the solution, not the problem!
- Take a look at keywords that you rank on pages 1-3 and write a post about related topics. If you rank well for one, you’ll rank well for the other.
- Look for inspiration in the trending topics in the Pinterest Possibilities Planner
- Choose a trending topic and make a roundup post – find the best articles on that topic and make a list of the best resources. Be sure to offer solutions to your reader…not just a list of links. Talk about why you think they’re a great source, and always link to one of your own posts in a round up if you can! If you want to use an image, always get permission.
2. Update an old post.
Do you have a post that did well for a while, but views have started to drop off? Has it been at least 6 months since the post was published?
Then you might consider updating your post.
- Think about adding new pictures: take new photos or use stock photos to make memes and infographics.
- Look at your internal and external links
- remove broken links
- link out to highly relevant articles from sites with a high domain authority
- avoid links that are targeting the same keyword as your post
- make sure you link to your updated post from 1 or 2 of your own posts
- Can you add a relevant YouTube video to the post? Readers love videos. If you don’t have one of your own, just grab a popular video from YouTube and embed it within your post.
- Would gifs me more appropriate than a video? Gifs can be fun to add to your post and are very sharable.
- Proof-read the post, refresh and add new content
- expand on the topic
- answer questions that readers may ask related to your topic
- look at articles that rank for your keyword and see if they’re covering something you’re not
- Make sure your post is search engine optimized: target keyword in title and slug, repeat keyword at least 2 times, use several variations of the keyword throughout the post and in image descriptions and alt text
- Check out how your post ranks on Google (I use this tool) and add relevant keywords to your post.
3. Make new pins for your top posts.
Pinterest can drive massive pageviews to your blog! If you’re not using Pinterest, then you’re missing out on a lot of traffic to your blog!
Even if you have an old pin that is still doing well, pins can get stale.
Pinterest likes new content, so create a new pin for your post and start sharing that one.
Try a different image, different wording, or a different size or shape. You don’t have to add the image to your post. You can upload an image directly to Pinterest using the red + button in the upper right-hand corner.
Make sure you’re adding keywords to your description and pin it to a relevant board on your profile. Then use Tailwind or BoardBooster to drip it out to your personal boards and group boards over the next several days to weeks.

4. Send out a newsletter.
Even if you have a small mailing list, a newsletter can help you bring in page views to your blog.
A quick template for a newsletter could be:
- Talk about something interesting you learned/read or something that happened
- List 2-3 new and seasonally relevant posts
- Invite to join your Facebook group or follow you on social media
- Sign off
5. Add your blog posts to Tailwind tribes and share threads in blogging Facebook groups.
If you aren’t collaborating with other bloggers then you are really missing out!
Like you, there are other bloggers looking for great content to share with their readers. There are lots of niche specific blogging groups on Facebook where you can share your posts and get great content to share with your own readers.
When other bloggers share your content, you’ll definitely see more blog traffic.
Make it easy for them to share your posts by including shareable Pinterest friendly images and click worthy titles.
